I talk about the NICU, and Nixon being born premature WAY too much. People are probably sick of it, but it changed my life. I want to talk about preemies, because November is prematurity awareness month.
I didn't know much about preemies, but I nannied a boy who was premature. I still didn't know how scary it is. Once I had Nixon I learned a lot in the Newborn Intensive Care Unit, luckily I had a very healthy preemie. Everything had developed very well, just his little lungs needed some help. He was on oxygen for only four days, which most preemies go home with oxygen. The scary thing about giving tiny babies oxygen is it messes with their eye sight. How? I don't know, I'm not a doctor. There are SO many things that could have been worst, but I'm so grateful Nixon is healthy and happy. We were in the NICU for 50 days, but it seemed like 50 years. Nixon was born at 31 weeks, and weighing 3 lb and 15 oz. He is now 8 months, and is suppose to be 6 months. He has a tiny little body, and huge personality. He's about to start crawling, about to break in his first tooth, and is just a normal boy. Being premature doesn't make you any different, it just shows how much of a fighter you are.
There is about 15 MILLION babies born premature, and about a 1 million will die each year. I didn't know this, but there is a foundation to help prevent premature births. It's called the March of Dimes, visit there website to learn more. If there are any moms that would like to share your story of your preemie, please comment on this post (I love reading about same experiences). If you know of any moms that are going through a rough baby patch, I want to help because I know how scary it is.
